15 Minutes of FAME: On discretization of inverse problems

15 Minutes of FAME is the FAME Flagship’s monthly open morning coffee webinar series in which the Flagship’s researchers and partners offer snapshots into their current scientific work and activities within the FAME network.

This webinar will be presented by Professor Lauri Oksanen (University of Helsinki).

The most successful computational methods for solving classical well-posed problems for partial differential equations are equipped with proven convergence rates, which are often optimal in the sense that the numerical approximation captures the continuum solution as accurately as the discretization allows. Understanding optimal accuracy for ill-posed problems is more delicate due to their sensitivity to noise.

Over the past few years, we have created a systematic numerical analysis framework for linear ill-posed problems of the unique continuation type. Passing from linear problems to more general nonlinear inverse problems poses a major challenge. We describe some new results in this direction.

Grab your morning coffee and kickstart your day with us on the first Thursday of every month to hear more about how FAME shapes the future with mathematics, physics, and computin
