15 Minutes of FAME: Enabling monitoring of human-caused emissions with the Emission Observatory online platform

Thursday, 4.6.2026 | 8:45-9:00
Zoom Meeting

15 Minutes of FAME is the FAME Flagship’s monthly open morning coffee webinar series in which the Flagship’s researchers and partners offer snapshots into their current scientific work and activities within the FAME network.

This webinar will be presented by Senior Research Scientist Janne Hakkarainen (Finnish Meteorological Institute).

Over the past decade, satellite-based measurements of greenhouse gases have transformed the estimation of emission rates from human-caused hotspots. Many space agencies, organisations, and private companies are now developing new greenhouses gas (GHG) satellite missions and constellations to observe plumes and support future monitoring of GHG emissions.

This webinar introduces the Emission Observatory – Pilot for Africa platform, an interactive map service for monitoring human-caused GHG and air pollution hotspots in Africa using satellite observations and state-of-the-art emission estimation methods. Specific focus areas include cities and megacities, the mining sector (particularly critical minerals needed for the green transition), energy production, and the oil and gas industry.

Grab your morning coffee and kickstart your day with us on the first Thursday of every month to hear more about how FAME shapes the future with mathematics, physics, and computin
