FAME extended knowledge and built future skills at Jyväskylä Summer School

On 10 – 14 August 2026, the FAME Flagship continued its training activities of the previous summers by hosting an inverse problems summer school as part of the University of Jyväskylä’s annual Jyväskylä Summer School.

The FAME Flagship is committed in training skilled professionals to combat pressing challenges that arise from the industry and society. As an official partner of one of the largest and oldest summer schools in Finland, FAME has had an opportunity and privilege to contribute to the inverse problems-related training internationally and deepen the available education practices nationally.

As with previous years, the 2026 summer school activities consisted of two courses, taught by esteemed guest lecturers and free-of-charge for the participants.

Dr. Melody Alsaker is an Associate Professor in Mathematics at Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington, United States. Her course at the summer school focused on the applied and computational aspects of electrical impedance tomography (EIT), a non-invasive imaging method used both in medicine and industrial processes. The course examined how EIT is being used in different settings, how modelling choices influence image quality, and how to interpret reconstructed conductivity images.

The FAME Flagship extends our deepest gratitude to Dr. Alsaker for taking the time to share her expertise and knowledge to the next generation of inverse problems experts!

The other inverse problems course focused also on EIT and was taught by none other than the FAME Flagship’s Vice Director, Professor Samuli Siltanen from the University of Helsinki. Providing participants insight into the theory of EIT, including nonlinearity, ill-posedness, and reconstruction approaches, the summer school course continues Prof. Siltanen’s renowned and long-term work for the benefit of national and global inverse problems communities. We could not be prouder!

For over three decades, the Jyväskylä Summer School has gathered students from all over the world to deepen their expertise on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics subjects and expand their professional and academic networks. We wish to express our sincerest thanks to the Jyväskylä Summer School organisers for their work, partnership, and support.

FAME will return to Jyväskylä in 2027!
