The FAME Flagship’s Connect & Collaborate Event 2026 at UEF’s Kuopio campus brought together academia, healthcare, and industry to spotlight advances in medical technologies and imaging and industrial and environmental applications.
To bring together FAME’s expertise and actors from different sectors of the Finnish society, the FAME Flagship organised a full-day Connect & Collaborate Event at the University of Eastern Finland’s (UEF) Kuopio campus on Wednesday, 26 August 2026. From the early days of FAME, the Connect & Collaborate concept has served as a platform to create connections, share knowledge, and envision future innovations.
Hosted by local Flagship’s Principal Investigators from UEF and joined by expert guest speakers from the Kuopio-based research and development company IQVIA Laboratories Finland, Kuopio University Hospital, and aggregates, minerals processing and metals refining processes-focused Metso Finland Oy, this year’s Connect & Collaborate Event focused on themes of Medical Technology and Imaging and Industrial and Environmental Applications.
Sharing knowledge and showcasing methods
The event opened with welcoming words by FAME Director, Prof. Tanja Tarvainen, and FAME industrial collaboration impact working group lead Prof. Marko Vauhkonen. The two morning sessions on medical technology and imaging focused on such topics as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) development and accessibility, imaging applications in pre-clinical drug development, photoacoustic and nuclear medicine imaging, AI and machine learning methods, advanced modelling, and medical imaging-specific inverse problems.
The afternoon session on industrial and environmental applications included insights into tomography, automation, greenhouse gas monitoring, physics-informed neural networks, and atmospheric remote sensing. The day also included plenty of opportunities for networking breaks and concluded with guided tours to the local Biomedical Optical Imaging and Ultrasound (OPUS) and Kuopio Biomedical Imaging Unit (Kuopio-BIU) research laboratories.
