In recent years, the paradigm of data-driven image reconstruction has gathered considerable attention, due to its success in improving reconstruction quality and offering computational speed-up. Nevertheless, the majority of such data-driven approaches comes without a thorough mathematical understanding. While we cannot solve this shortcoming yet, we will provide a conceptual overview of data-driven approaches that combine classical model-based inversion and provide varying degrees of interpretability as well as some theoretical guarantees.
